Behind the Scenes with Cliffemount’s Management Team

An Interview with Engineering Director at Cliffemount, Michael Regan.

The redevelopment of Cliffemount is a project that we are all invested in, and so we each have our own role to play within the management team. The specialist knowledge and experience we each possess means we all bring something different to the project. 

One key member of our team is Director Michael Regan, who is focused on Mechanics, Engineering and Services. We sat down for a chat with Michael, who we call Mike, to discuss his background, his involvement with Cliffemount and the importance of the Passivhaus standards.


 

Hi Mike. Thanks for taking time out for a chat. We thought it was a good idea to let our community get to know you a little better. 

Absolutely. Well, I guess I’ll start with a bit about my background. Prior to entering the Financial Services sector 20 years ago, I gained a lot of engineering, operations, and technology experience through working as a Senior Engineering Manager and later, becoming a director of an electronics company within a publicly listed corporation.  I went on to own an IT Services business before moving into the financial services sector as a Business Process Consultant. 

Over the years, I’ve gained hands-on experience designing and optimising operational systems, developing and implementing innovative back-office systems and applications that are useful in creating and managing client investment portfolios. 

I’ve worked on many large-scale projects, such as designing and constructing a factory, as well as successfully relocating factories and offices, and I feel that this experience is very valuable when it comes to the redevelopment of Cliffemount.


We agree. The experience you bring to the team is great and your role is crucial to the success of the project. Can you tell us a bit more about what you’re working on?

Sure. A lot of my involvement to date has been focused on finalising the plans for the build. This has been a huge focus for all of us as you know. As we’ve got closer to completing that part of the project, I’ve been spending more time on things such as connections and services agreements. A main focus has been assessing TV and media options for bedrooms and the pub. More recently, I’ve been agreeing the lease line for broadband and voice services with BT. 

A big responsibility for me is making sure the Utility supplies and M&E services meet the requirements for Electricity, Water, Broadband, Wi-Fi, Point of Sale equipment and TVs, which is a complex task. Alongside all of this, I have to remain conscious of the Passivhaus Standard we are working towards.


What impact would you say the Passivhaus Standard is having on your decision making? Has it made much difference to what you can and can’t adopt technology wise?

I’d say the biggest area it impacts on is the contractors we can use. To meet Passivhaus’ Standard the building has to be constructed to a high-quality standard and so this limits the pool of builders with the knowledge and experience to take on the contract. As a team we have to consider the Passivhaus Standard in all our decision making, so really it has an impact on everything.
